after selling his wholesale grocery business for £200,000(equiv £15,000,000
today), Francis Frith started to persue his hobby of travel and photography
and so began the legacy he has left for the modern day historian and enthusiast.
The
francis Frith collection contains over a 350,000 photographs of 7000 cities,
towns and villages all around the world, including China, Japan,the USA
and Canada. When he died in 1898 Francis Frith had an amazing 2000 outlets,
more than Boots and WHSmith have combined today. Frith & CO were also
a major lead in developing the holiday postcard as we see it today.
